Flagyl 500 Mg
Flagyl is an antibiotic and an antiprotozoal drug. The pharmacological name of flagyl is metronidazole. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole prototype. Some of the anaerobic bacteria sensitive to flagyl are B. fragilis, Fusobacterium, Clostridium perfringens, Helicobacter pylori and anaerobic Streptococci. It has a cidal effect against protozoa including trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia. Although flagyl does not directly inhibit the helminth Dracunculus medinensis, it helps in the extraction of the worm from under the skin.
The mode of action of flagyl is that after entering the microorganisms by diffusion, it causes cytotoxicity by damaging the DNA.
Flagyl 500 mg is the regularly used regimen for most of the anaerobic infections. But it is also available in higher doses also like 750mg extended release tablets and capsules. Flagyl 500 mg is also available as intravenous solution for infusion. Flagyl is available in gel form and cream base for local application.
Flagyl 500mg is the first line of drug for any kind of amoebiasis. It is used in the treatment of amoebic liver abscess and amoebic dysentery. It is used parenterally at a dose of flagyl 500 mg i. v. 8th hourly at least for three days and then it is converted into oral dose.
For the treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis, the dose is flagyl 500mg tds for 7 to 14 days orally. It is to be administered for both the sexual partners. Flagyl is also advised for local application where it is available as vaginal gel.
Flagyl 500mg is also given where anaerobic infections are suspected like pelvic abscess, following gastro intestinal surgeries and brain abscess. In these conditions flagyl 500mg is administered parenterally.
In acne rosacea, flagyl is used in the form of cream base for local application.
Flagyl 500mg is also used for oral infections like gingivitis and other dental infections.
